Naruto is the protagonist of the story. He is a child whose greatest dream is to become a great ninja and rise above the level of Hokage. He is greatly ostracized by people, as the spirit of the nine-tailed fox, a terrible monster that caused earthquakes and tidal waves with just the movement of its tail, is sealed in him. The monster was imprisoned in Naruto’s body by the fourth Hokage, at the cost of his own life. Naruto, in order to show off, loves to play tricks of all kinds. He also loves the Ramen that his first master Iruka cooks for him. With some difficulty, he manages to become an apprentice ninja, and together with Sasuke and Sakura, under the guidance of Jonin Kakashi, he becomes a ninja, taking on more and more complex missions. During his first C-level mission, in which he must protect Mr. Tazuna while building a bridge, he meets his grandson Inari, who has also been left fatherless. Naruto convinces him that crying does no good, and Inari changes his personality. During the fight against Zabuza, he proves to be very useful and capable of devising very effective strategies. Later, in the chunin selection exam, he skillfully passes the tests astounding all those who considered him the worst leaf ninja! He is also trained by one of the three legendary ninjas-Jaraiya-who teaches him a very powerful technique, the Rasengan.
A descendant of the powerful and respectable Uchih lineage, he is the last remaining member of his clan along with his brother Itachi following his brother’s own extermination of the clan. Sasuke is Naruto’s main rival, as he is an excellent aspiring ninja and is highly rated among girls. He is especially liked by Sakura who is head over heels in love with him! He however doesn’t seem to care much, rather he decides to train hard and become super strong to kill his brother. Orochimaru, one of the three Legendary Ninjas, decides to make him his disciple and stamps his mark on his neck. Sasuke thanks to this mark will become much stronger and blinded by the desire for revenge decides to follow the ninjas of the Sound Village under Orochimaru’s command.
The girl of the group who is madly in love with Sasuke gives no account to poor Naruto’s attentions. Her love for Sasuke puts her at odds with Ino, a girl she has known since childhood. She is the least strong of Kakashi’s group but despite this she does not feel inferior. In fact, she will show that she is very firm and determined to walk together with Naruto and Sasuke and not just “watch their backs.” In addition, she is an expert in the dissolution of illusory arts and chakra control.
Kakashi, one of the strongest jonin in the leaf village, possesses the Sharingan in his left eye (he is not a member of the Uchiha clan but was transplanted). He is entrusted with the group of Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. He is a very experienced ninja and has high speed. His trainings are particularly severe. Through these, Kakashi wants to teach his students the role of a ninja. He considers teamwork important, while he despises individualism. He will then only follow Sasuke’s training because he is the possessor of the Sharingan. Kakashi, in the past, also served in the Leaf ssassin team, so he possesses several specific techniques for pursuits. In foreign villages he is known as a “copy ninja,” as he possesses the innate ability of the Sharingan, an eye that allows him to predict and reproduce his opponent’s movements and techniques. His direct rival is Master Gai, with whom he often fights for the purpose of finding out who is the best jonin in the leaf village. At the beginning of the series Kakashi says that Master Gai has defeated him 50 times, compared to the 49 times Kakashi has won. Kakashi is also a very strict master: it is known that the promotion rate of his students, before the arrival of Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura, is zero!
Iruka is Naruto’s first master in the leaf village academy. He is a very knowledgeable chunin who can be strict but also understanding with his students. One example? When he orders Naruto to clean his scribbles on the faces of the hokage carved on the mountain and afterwards as a reward offers him a bowl of ramen, his favorite food. He has a special bond with Naruto, as Iruka has also been an orphan since childhood. Compared to other people, in fact, he does not have a grudge against Naruto, in fact he considers him very similar to him because he never had anyone to take care of him. He likes to tell his pupils the story of the leaf village, and his lessons teach children the main duties of ninjas: defending loved ones with all your strength and never backing down in the face of danger.
Jonin of the Leaf Village. Kakashi’s eternal rival, he is entrusted with the Neji-TenTen-Rock Lee group. He is particularly close to the latter, whom he has taught the values he believes in most, namely courage, determination and loyalty. His speed seems even greater than Kakashi’s, and his strength is certainly no less: with one punch he is able to kill a ninja and break the wall (as happens during the war between the leaf village and the sound village).
Hyuga Neji is a member of the Hyuga clan, a powerful clan in the leaf village divided into two, the main lineage and the cadet lineage of which Neji is a member. Like all members of the cadet lineage he is forced to protect members of the main lineage. Despite this, Neji is the best user of Byakugan in the entire Hyuga clan. (The clan’s innate ability that allows it to see the flow of chakra inside the opponent’s body).
Rock Lee is an aspiring chunin from the leaf village who participates in the exam in order to test his potential against the best ninjas. He first appears when he challenges Sasuke, just before the first round of the exam begins. Rock Lee displays impressive speed combined with unparalleled martial arts knowledge. In fact, he is highly skilled in taijutsu, hand-to-hand combat, which he has improved with much practice and effort. His deadliest techniques are the frontal lotus, with which he hurls his opponent to the ground, creating a strong impact, and the back lotus, a forbidden technique that requires the opening of certain “gates,” or “doors” inside the body that if opened cause one to lose cognition and damage the body. Rock Lee, moreover, is a very stubborn person: he loves to try every possible challenge and practice until he succeeds at something, he continuously trains to achieve his goals, and he always tries to give his best.
TenTen is the girl in Rock Lee and Neji’s group; she is a skilled user of all kinds of weapons, so much so that during her fights the battlefield is covered with a hundred weapons of all kinds. She participates in the tournament to become a chunin but is defeated by Temari, however.
He is the Jonin to whom Choji, Shikamaru and Ino are entrusted. Endowed with excellent experience and above-normal strength, he prefers certain types of weapons, including the fearsome tekken, a very sharp wrist blade. He is very adept at keeping his trio of genin compact, often arranging evenings together (often at restaurants–> see Choji).
Choji along with Shikamaru and Ino is entrusted to the Jonin Asuma. At the beginning of the story he does not seem particularly strong; in fact, he is defeated without difficulty by Dosu Kinuta in the preliminary meeting of the third round. Later he learns some very interesting techniques, based mainly on physical strength. He loves food more than anything else, and to keep him busy Asuma offers him food at the end of every important fight. His best friend is Shikamaru.
Shikamaru, an excellent ninja from the leaf village, until the beginning of the chuunin exam is not held in high regard, mainly because of his listlessness, despite this he will turn out to be a very skilled strategist and his master Asuma will reveal that he has a very high I.Q. and the ability to devise strategies in a very short time. Because of these qualities, he is the only genin to pass the exam and thus become a chunin.
Ino is Sakura’s eternal rival for winning Sasuke’s love; they were once close friends and despite often not showing it they still are. During the second round of the exam, in fact, Ino lashes out at sound ninjas who had threatened Sakura. Ino later emerges from the Chunin selection exam precisely by fighting Sakura and getting a “tie” with her.
She is one of the very few female Jonin in the leaf village, and this shows her extraordinary training. She is in fact an expert in martial arts, especially in magic and illusionism techniques. Regarding the examination to become a chunin, she is entrusted with Shino, Hinata and Kiba.
Shino, a member of the Aburame clan, is able to control insects by letting them live inside her body and feeding them chakra (an innate ability of her clan). He then bases his fighting style precisely on these insects, which he can hurl in large swarms at the enemy according to his will. He is a very quiet and thoughtful fellow, and we will hardly see him bluster or launch himself recklessly into attack in a fight.
Hinata is the descendant of the main lineage of the Hyuga clan, Neji feels deep hatred toward her and her lineage believing she is responsible for her father’s death. She is a very shy girl who, however, thanks to the courage given to her by Naruto, is able to overcome her fears and fight as she knows how. In the third round of the exam she loses to Neji, but after still proving that she has the qualities to be a good ninja!
Inuzuka Kiba is a singular Ninja who always has by his side the trusty companion Akamaru, a small dog who can sense chakra and helps him in combat. His techniques are often based on his almost animal nature: great power and impetus in fact characterize his fighting style.
Sarutobi, the Third Hokage
A student of the first and second Hokage, he is the leader of the leaf village as well as the strongest Ninja in the entire village. He is bound to the village by a strong sense of belonging, considering all the villagers as one big family, and a pride in ancestors and traditions. He dies as a result of Orochimaru’s attack, however, saving his village like his predecessors.
Yondaime, Fourth Hokage
He is the fourth Hokage, a student of Jiraya. He died saving the village from the attack of the fox demon, who imprisoned him by sealing him in Naruto’s body. He was probably the strongest of the four hokage, and the jonin often call for his return to help them fight (despite the fact that it is impossible).
He is one of the three Legendary Ninjas, after the death of the third Hokage he will be asked to take his place but will give up, however, promising to seek Tsunade for him to fill that role. With him he will take Naruto, determined to train him so that in the future he will be able to defend himself from the attack of such powerful ninjas as Itachi Uchiha in search of the fox demon within him.
The girl of the trio of legendary ninjas along with Jiraya and Orochimaru. After the deaths of her boyfriend and little brother (strikingly resembling Naruto), of which she does not rest for any reason, she became the best ninja doctor in the leaf village. Found by Jiraya after a search of nearby villages, she will accept the role of Hokage, but not without problems: in fact, Orochimaru will offer her a truly diabilical pact in exchange for healing her arms.
Brother of Sasuke and member of the Uchiha clan. He exterminates his entire clan with the exception of his brother, although the reason for this is still unknown. Joins the Akatsuki organization, made up of the strongest wanted Ninjas from each village. Orochimaru claims that Itachi is much stronger than he is, although Itachi fights only in rare situations. He is, in fact, perpetually traveling to ninja villages to learn and master new techniques and invocations, including Naruto’s fox demon.
