Who is Rikudo Sennin in Naruto ?

Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki (大筒木ハゴロモ, Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo), known to the wider Earth population as the Rikudo Hermit or Sage of the Six Ways (六道仙人, Rikudō Sennin), was a legendary divine figure who is considered the ancestor of the shinobi, for his act of founding the ninshū that led to the creation of the ninja world. He was the son of Princess Kaguya and along with his fraternal twin brother, Hamura, were the first to be born with the same powerful chakra as their mother. Together, he and his brother defeated their mother, who had become the terrifying ten-tailed demon, and sealed the powerful beast within him, making Hagoromo the first jinchūriki.

Context

Alongside Hamura, Hagoromo, the older twin brother, was born as one of the two children of Kaguya, a princess who ate the forbidden fruit of the Divine Tree Chakra appearing once every millennium in order to gain divine abilities, which she used to end the constant wars of that time. As a result, Hagoromo was born with the ability to manipulate the same type of powerful chakra as her mother. Angry that her chakra was passed on to others, Kaguya merged with the Divine Tree to form Juubi the Ten-Tailed Beast, who are trying to get her chakra back.

Juubi rampaged through the land until Hagoromo and his younger twin brother managed to defeat the beast, with Hagoromo becoming its jinchūriki, earning him godlike reverence for the virtue of his victory. By searching for his mother’s technique, Hagoromo was able to free the world from her infinite Tsukuyomi. Calling himself the Sage of the Six Paths after entering the priesthood, he traveled across the country giving chakra to everyone in the world, spreading his ideals and religion of ninshū in the process. His great deeds and ultimate desire to bring peace to the ninja war-torn world made him widely known as the savior of this world (この世の救世主, Kono Yo no Kyūseishu).

juubi vs hagoromo and amura

Hagoromo’s ultimate wish was to establish peace throughout the world, but it was a goal that would never be achieved in a single lifetime. Knowing this, he chose to entrust his dream and legacy to his two sons, and began teaching them the ninshū. The eldest son, Indra, was recognized by Hagoromo as a true prodigy, who soon began to revel in his natural prowess and became very reclusive. The younger son, Asura, proved to be the exact opposite, having shown no special abilities or natural talent, but he pushed through his limitations, becoming stronger and more mature through his struggles and befriending others along the way. Hagoromo recognized the path chosen by Asura, agreeing that love and cooperation were the true keys to peace.

Inspired by his young son, Hagoromo separated the chakra from Juubi in his body and used his technique of creating all things to divide it into nine separate bodies, creating the tailed beasts and giving each one a name. After extracting them all at once, Hagoromo remained weak and incapacitated for several months, although the powerful life force of Juubi’s shell kept him alive. Some time after their creation, the young tail demons were told that they were still linked to each other, although they were separate entities. Hagoromo also told them that they would eventually become one, but not as they were originally, and that a person will appear at that time to show them what true power is. In the anime, it is shown that before his death, the Sage and his followers built temples in nine different parts of the world where the tailed beasts could live and be protected. Hagoromo finally seals the ten tails in the moon. On his deathbed, he chooses Asura as his successor and entrusts him with his power, but Indra, dominated by bitterness and envy and encouraged and manipulated by Black Zetsu, a manifestation of Kaguya’s will, fights against his brother, starting a war between them that will continue through their descendants.

Suspecting that Indra or one of his reincarnations would eventually attempt to take Asura’s power, the Hermit Rikudo left behind a stone stele detailing his history in an effort to make them reconsider their decision. Only those who possess the Rinnegan can fully decipher the contents of the stele, while a reader with other dōjutsu such as the Sharingan can still partially interpret the information. However, unbeknownst to him, Black Zetsu, a manifestation of his mother’s will, had altered the contents of his stele so that he could manipulate Indra’s descendants, the Uchiha clan, through the ages to resurrect Kaguya and initiate the Infinite Tsukuyomi once again.
Even though Hagoromo died and his body was destroyed, his chakra and consciousness remained and traveled through the world through the centuries.

In the anime version, Hagoromo and his brother lived until their teens in ignorance of their mother’s true amoral nature. As their homeland continued to prosper, people would periodically disappear for a sacred ritual of the divine tree. One day, the brothers were approached by Gamamaru, who revealed to them that beyond the nearby mountain tops lay the truth of the ritual. Although he initially ignored the toad’s words, Hagoromo became concerned when a local girl in his care named Haori participated in the ritual. When the brothers asked their mother to stop the rituals, Kaguya ignored their concern, saying only that it was necessary for the “arrival of the others.” Finally deciding to investigate, the two brothers were horrified to learn that the missing citizens had been sacrificed for the benefit of the divine tree.

This particularly hurt Hagoromo, and he awoke the Sharingan in his grief. Eager to know more, the brothers sought out Gamamaru. He told them the story of their mother, who had come to Earth and used the fruit of the Divine Tree to gain great power and enslave much of the country using the Infinite Tsukuyomi, including their father. Deciding that they needed more power to face Kaguya if she became hostile, Hagoromo began to train in senjutsu with Gamamaru. Although Hagoromo quickly improved in the art, Kaguya soon realized her sons’ ploy.

After Hagoromo finished his training under the Toad Sage, he returned to confront Kaguya, but not before Gamamaru gave him a special seal imbued with great sage power refined over the centuries. Once near Kaguya, mother and son made their respective points of view known. Hagoromo tried to reason with Kaguya, but his words fell on deaf ears, for Kaguya considered Hagoromo ungrateful. She asked Hamura, who was brainwashed by her, to attack Hagoromo. Unable to reason with Hamura, Hagoromo had no choice but to shoot his beloved brother, which awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan. Deciding to use Gamamaru’s one-time gift, Hagoromo placed the seal tag on Hamura and healed him.

Infuriated that her chakra was used against her, Kaguya wants the Divine Tree to turn into Juubi, who attempt to retrieve her chakra for her. Hagoromo and Hamura fought their mother and the ten-tailed demon in a battle that lasted for months, decimating the earth in the process, until they were able to defeat them both by sealing Kaguya, and Hagoromo divided the Ten-Tailed chakra into nine tailed beasts. Later, Hagoromo was able to free the world from Kaguya’s Infinite Tsukuyomi. While Hamura decided to stay on the moon to watch over their mother, Hagoromo chose to travel the earth to find suitable homes for the tail demons and to repent for the damage he had done to the world during his fight with Kaguya. Before leaving, Gamamaru told Hagoromo a prophecy about a mischievous blue-eyed child who would one day come into contact with the bijû and perform a miracle.

Eventually, Hagoromo returned to his native village to serve as a teaching center for the ninshū. He also fell in love and married a woman with whom he had two children, Indra and Asura. During the second pregnancy, there were complications as Hagoromo’s wife died shortly after giving birth to her second child. Hagoromo later began to instruct his sons in ninshū. The eldest son, Indra, was recognized by Hagoromo as a true prodigy, quickly began to revel in his natural prowess, and became very reclusive, unaware that much of this came from the subtle manipulations of black Zetsu. The younger son, Asura, proved to be the exact opposite, having shown no special abilities or natural talent, but he grew despite his limitations, becoming stronger and more mature because of his struggles and befriending others along the way. Finally deciding that the time had come to choose a successor to Ninshū, Hagoromo sent each of his sons on a different mission to restore a troubled land ravaged by the battle against Kaguya, to test their abilities. Indra returned quickly after completing his while Asura took much longer. Deciding to wait for the return of his youngest son before making his decision, he was informed by Gamamaru of the nature of Indra’s mission. After a year had passed since the missions were given, Asura completed his mission, but also returned with many people from the village, who were inspired by Asura and even learned Ninshū from him, having helped him complete his mission.

With Asura and Indra present, Hagoromo decided to choose his successor to Ninshū. Much to everyone’s surprise, Hagoromo chose Asura. This caused great anger and confusion in Indra, who thought he was worthy of becoming the successor, and he stormed off into the desert. Later, Hagoromo explained to Asura why he had chosen him as successor and asked him to take care of the world with Indra, and Hagoromo gave Asura his power. Afterwards, Indra, in a fit of rage, attacks Hagoromo, Asura, and the rest of the villagers with his Susanoo and his newly acquired Mangekyō Sharingan, his explanation of how he obtained the dōjutsu eliciting Hagoromo’s disgust. Hagoromo and the rest of the villagers transferred their chakra to Asura to help him confront Indra, forcing the older brother to flee.

Susanoo hagoromo otsutsuki

While Hagoromo was near death and lying on his deathbed, Indra appeared to his father after years of disappearance and explained his ambition to slay the ninshū. Hagoromo later relayed this information to Asura and his family, entrusting his youngest son with his last wish before he died.

Personality

Hagoromo was a man who sought peace by spreading his wisdom throughout the world. He was exceptionally wise, as he was able to bring great change to the world by simply spreading the principles of chakra and his religion. He also seemed to care a lot about the tail demons while they were still with him; he gave them each a name as a sign of their individuality, and told them that no matter how far apart they were, they would always be together and would one day be guided to the right path. Kurama even shed a tear at the thought of his impending death, suggesting that the beasts may have viewed him as a sort of father figure. His compassion and desire for peace were so great that even after learning of Kaguya’s amoral actions, which included the death of Hagoromo’s crush Haori, Hagoromo never succumbed to his grief and rage, though it also awakened his Sharingan. Instead, he hoped to solve problems with words rather than violence. Also, although he rebelled against Kaguya, he still loved and respected her, constantly calling her “Mother” even when he recognized how bad she had become.

hagoromo young

In the anime, Hagoromo’s personality has remained mostly the same as in his youth, aside from the periodic immaturity that comes with adolescence. For example, when he gloats when Kaguya’s attempt to turn Hamura against him not only backfires, but also allows him to awaken his Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan.

When he met Naruto, Hagoromo proved to be a very patient and composed individual, not being affected by Naruto’s outbursts. He was a very intelligent man, as even from a young age he was able to see clearly through the behavior and intentions of others. Very methodically, he was able to learn new forms of study, including language and culture, able to seamlessly change his speech patterns and dialect to be better understood by people from another time. [He was also very strict about recognizing his teachings as “ninshū,” noting that “ninjutsu” was created for combat as opposed to the ninshū pursuit of peace, and would grasp his staff quite firmly when Naruto failed to distinguish the difference between the two. At the same time, Hagoromo was a very modest man, openly admitting that change is inevitable and one can only hope to prepare for it. Likewise, he was open and honest about his personal mistakes and shame as a father and leader. Despite his status as a deity, he also believed that no one should have more power than another, as there is a good chance that the person will become arrogant and desire even greater power. After defeating his mother, Hagoromo made a personal choice to avoid using his inhuman powers whenever possible, both to atone for the damage he caused to the earth and to better relate to normal people, feeling a certain pride and joy in performing his tasks with normal effort.

After trying to mend the rift he unwittingly created between his sons and their respective current incarnations, he finally complained that he could not repair the damage he caused, and thus only trusted Naruto. Hagoromo was also rather open-minded, but also a curious individual. When Sasuke told him about his drastic plans to revolutionize the world, Hagoromo still shared half of his power with Sasuke to see how events would play out differently.

Appearance

hagoromo youth

Hagoromo was a tall, pale-skinned man who had deep wrinkles and a strong jaw in his old age. He had shoulder-length, spiky, pale brown hair with a braided chin-length strand that hung in front of his left ear. He also wore a goatee, which was short in his younger years and tapered to his waist in his older years. Hagoromo had a pair of horns extending from each side of his forehead and – in the anime – white eyes without pupils. He also had a red Rinnegan-like mark in the center of his forehead, referred to as his third eye (第三の眼, Daisan no Me); in the anime, this mark appeared when he first awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan. Hagoromo wore a full white kimono with a pattern of six black magatama around a high collar, under which, he wore a necklace that was also composed of six black magatama. On the back of his kimono, there was a larger black Rinnegan mark with a pattern of nine magatama arranged in three rows of three below.

Abilities

amura and hagoromo otsutsuki

Hagoromo is widely accepted as the most powerful figure in history, second only to his mother, after defeating Juubi and sealing his mother alongside his brother, with Hamura recognizing his older brother as the stronger of the twins. The hermit Rikudo’s Jutsu control far exceeds that of other ninjas. Hagoromo’s power and accomplishments eventually made him revered as a god. He gained a large group of followers, as many people around the world strived to learn from his teachings. His power even transcended time, allowing him to continue to observe the world and interact with people long after his death.

Chakra

Born as the son of Kaguya, Hagoromo was endowed with remarkably powerful and equally important reserves of chakra, evident by the distance to which his dōjutsu naturally advanced on its own containing the release of Yin and Yang. The first person born with chakra, he also became the first man on Earth to understand the very nature of chakra. Without any prior training, he had innate and immensely precise control of his power, needing no hand seals for his various feats and proved to be very versatile in its use, such as transferring chakra to others. His reserves increased exponentially after becoming the first jinchūriki in history with the great power of Juubi contained within him. His power was so great that centuries after his death, with his genes greatly diluted, his distant descendants, Kinkaku and Ginkaku, were able to obtain jinchūriki-like powers by consuming Kurama’s meat instead of dying, as did another Kumo shinobi by attempting the same thing with Hachibi.

Hagoromo has also been shown to have impressive raw power. Though peaceful, he demonstrated considerable prowess in hand-to-hand combat, able to easily fend off the assault of his brainwashed younger brother. He also possessed equally remarkable strength, able to effortlessly pull mature trees from the ground.

Ninshū

ninshu hagoromo otsutsuki

Hagoromo’s wisdom, combined with his kekkei mōra, enabled him to create the original form of ninjutsu, Ninshū. He invented Ninshū as a way to bring peace to a war-torn world by sharing chakra with others, and then teaching them to connect together with everyone using their spiritual energies as a way to understand each other’s feelings. He could also use it as a way to heal any illness in an individual. He wanted this creation to connect all humans and bring harmony, however, after his death, humans began to use the new power they had to fight against each other, and widen the gap between them, turning it into what became ninjutsu.

Natural transformation

chakra hagoromo otsutsuki

Hagoromo became the first person to master the five elemental transformations of nature. In the anime, he is seen using lightning release to demolish a gigantic rock and create a lightning blade to impale his enemies. He could also use the release of wind to produce air currents to cut the bonds of the God Tree. With his mastery of Inyoton, he was able to combine his Yang chakra, the essence of physical energy, with his Yin chakra, the essence of spiritual energy, to create a form from nothingness with a simple thought to give it life, an ability he used to create the tail demons from Juubi chakra.

Fūinjutsu

In preparation for his fight against Kaguya, alongside Hamura, Hagoromo developed immense prowess in fūinjutsu. Through his mastery of sealing techniques, he was first able to seal Juubi into his own body, and was then able to seal them out when his life ended. Even on his deathbed, Hagoromo was able to employ his Chibaku Tensei technique on a large scale and use this chakra to create the moon and trap Juubi’s body in it, which clearly shows his incredible power. His mastery of this skill also allowed him to mark others with some of his powers.

Dōjutsu

Sharingan

sharingan hagoromo

In the anime, Hagoromo awakened the Sharingan after finding the dead body of his lover Haori. Like his descendants – the Uchiha – he has acquired a much greater power of perception, able to clearly see the tactics of his enemies to better counter them. Uniquely, his Sharingan first appeared in full maturity with three tomoe in both eyes and he could maintain the use of this power seemingly indefinitely and unimpeded.

Mangekyō Sharingan

Mangekyu sharingan hagoromo

In the anime, finding himself unable to stop his younger brother from attacking in his brainwashed state, Hagoromo was forced to mortally wound him, thus manifesting the Mangekyō Sharingan. Quickly mastering this new power in battle, Hagoromo became able to use Susanoo in his full form to fight on equal terms with Kaguya then transformed into Juubi , even being able to deflect one of Juubi’s tail demon orbs. With the simultaneous awakening of the Rinnegan, Hagoromo seems to be able to access his Sharingan abilities even when the Rinnegan is activated and does not suffer any adverse effects from using this power, such as physical fatigue or deterioration of eyesight.

Rinnegan

rinnegan hagoromo

Hagoromo possessed a form derived from his mother’s dōjutsu; the Rinnegan. His pupils equipped with the Rinnegan gives him special techniques much more powerful than that of the Uchiwa clan’s Sharingan used by Itachi for example. In the anime, he manifested it simultaneously with his Mangekyō Sharingan. He was supposed to be the only person who had fully mastered the Rinnegan, and had also learned to control all five types of chakra natures. As the holder of the Rinnegan and leader of the akatsuki, Nagato openly admitted that his power was nothing compared to that of the Rikudo Hermit. The Rinnegan allows him to use all the abilities of the Six Paths Technique. With the Outer Path, he could summon souls from the Pure Land and also cancel another person’s use of Impure World Reincarnation, releasing the souls from their vessels and sending them back to the Pure Land.

Senjutsu

With his immense chakra reserves inherited from his mother, Hagoromo was very well suited to learning senjutsu to enhance his abilities. In the anime, he was taught it by Gamamaru at Mount Myōboku, and Hagoromo showed an innate talent for it, shocking Gamamaru with his ability to clearly sense the presence of natural energy even before he had received Sage training and mastering the art in an inconceivably short time. With his powerful chakra and Rinnegan, he was able to develop the Six Path Senjutsu, which allowed him to perform feats such as flying and levitating freely.

Spheres of Truth

sphere of truth

With his Six Paths Senjutsu, Hagoromo also had the ability to manifest up to ten Spheres of Truth at a time, which are composed of the five basic transformations of nature, the release of Yin-Yang, and the chakra of the Six Paths sage. He usually shaped one of the orbs into a two-headed shakujō. One end has a ringed hoop, while the other has a crescent-shaped curve, representing the sun and moon, respectively. With this malleable chakra, he can also form the sacred sword known as the Nunoboko sword, which he would have used to shape the world.

Bukijutsu

Hagoromo was shown carrying two objects. One was what appeared to be a katana, implying that he was proficient in kenjutsu, while the other was a shakujō – a ringed Buddhist staff meant to be used for prayer, another weapon he was probably proficient with.

Precious Pieces

Hagoromo wielded unique tools that became known as the treasures of the Rikudo Sennin, each of which possessed a unique and powerful ability. The five treasures are: the Bashōsen (Banana Fan), the Benihisago (Scarlet Flask), the Kōkinjō (Golden Rope), the Shichiseiken (Seven Star Saber), and the Kohaku no Jōhei (Amber Vase). By combining the Benihisago, the Kōkinjō, and the Shichiseiken, Hagoromo could capture the souls of his victims and then draw them into the gourd to seal them. With the Bashōsen, he could generate any of the five basic elements. The Kohaku no Jōhei allowed him to seal anyone without the elaborate procedures used for the Benihisago. Using these five tools requires huge amounts of chakra, which can easily kill the average person through exhaustion, though due to Hagoromo’s massive reserves, he shows no problem with this.

Jinchūriki of Juubi

After the Yang version of Kurama was extracted from Naruto Uzumaki, the legendary sage met in Naruto’s mind to talk to him, noting that he felt attracted to Naruto. After the young shinobi got angry because of Hagoromo’s philosophical speech, the latter comes to the point. He starts to explain his family history, from his mother to his two sons, to Naruto, which leads him to reveal to Naruto, that he is in fact the reincarnation of his younger son Asura. Realizing that Naruto had already realized this on some level, Hagoromo also went on to explain that in the same way, Indra has reincarnated his chakra into other people on several occasions, more recently, as Naruto correctly guessed, Indra’s chakra is in the possession of Sasuke Uchiha. Hagoromo explains that Indra’s previous reincarnation, Madara, sought not only the power of the Sage, but also that of his mother, having broken the normal cycle of life.

Naruto and Sasuke

naruto and sasuke with hermit rikudo

As the Sage asks Naruto to stop Madara Uchiwa, Naruto thanks him for his trust, though Hagoromo insists that he deserves no praise after his failures as a father and leader as well as for letting the world continue to follow the belief of power for peace. Naruto disagreed that Hagoromo was a failure. Gyūki, Shukaku, and Yin-Kurama agreed as they appeared inside Naruto’s mind, having just been transferred into Naruto’s body from Obito. As the tailed beasts expressed their agreement for Naruto to be the child of the prophecy, Hagoromo summoned the other tailed demons. Admitting his mistake of trusting only one son and ignoring the other, Hagoromo entrusted Naruto to help reshape the world for the better. He then asked Naruto what his goal was after the end of the great war. Simultaneously, elsewhere, Hagoromo met Sasuke, telling him the same story and asking him the same question. Accepting the respective answers of his reincarnated children, Hagoromo divided his power and chakra and distributed it equally between the two rivals/friends, thus making sure not to repeat the mistake of entrusting the task to only one. This also allowed Naruto and Sasuke to awaken the Six Paths Sage mode and Rinnegan respectively.

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki

hagoromo and the kage

Later, after Hashirama places his hand on half of Madara’s body, Hagoromo emerges from it in front of the reanimated Hokage, recognizing Hashirama as the previous transmigrant of Asura. Hagoromo then explains the current situation to the Hokage, and in the anime, he reveals his complete life story. He tells them about a powerful summoning technique that he is unable to perform now because he gave almost all his power to Sasuke and Naruto, but he gives instructions to the Hokage.

After sensing that his mother had finally been sealed by Naruto and Sasuke, with the Yin and Yang marks he gave them reappearing on his own hands, he calls upon the spirits of the deceased Kage to help him perform a summoning technique to bring back Team 7, the tailed demons, and Madara from the Kaguya dimension. Then, he thanks Naruto and Sasuke for saving the world. Hagoromo then thanks Kakashi for leading his students efficiently against Kaguya, who humbly answers that they did the most important work. Sasuke, realizing that Madara is still alive, goes to finish him off, but Hagoromo stops him by saying that if the tailed beasts are taken away from him without the help of the Demon Statue of the Outer Path, it means that he will soon die on his own. After everyone has spoken their last words, Hagoromo sends all the former Kage back to the afterlife.

hagoromo and team 7

As plans for the future are expressed, Hagoromo insists to the Yang-Kurama that he return to Naruto’s side. Turning his attention to the present, Hagoromo began instructing Naruto and Sasuke on how to dispel the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Even before this action began, Sasuke made his own plans known. Planning to kill the current Kage and take control of the tailed beasts, he quickly placed them under his genjutsu and locked them in his own Chibaku Tensei. Sasuke then explained that he wanted to reshape the world as it should have been, by making a revolution. Already knowing Sasuke’s intentions from their last conversation, Hagoromo was saddened to see that despite his efforts to make things right with his children in a new life, they always ended up fighting with each other. Naruto, however, firmly said that he would end this sibling feud. Knowing that his time left in this world was almost up, Hagoromo chose to trust Naruto. Observing the dissolution of the Kakashi team, he approached Kakashi who was tending to the unconscious Sakura. Citing the past as a reminder, he expresses his confidence in Naruto’s ability to turn Sasuke’s hatred into love. Hagoromo begins to disappear and he tells Kakashi to believe in them, as there is nothing more they can do.

Legacy

It is almost impossible to overstate Hagoromo’s effect on the course of the ninja world’s development. As the first true ninja, he created the ninja world, revolutionized it, and left it forever changed. The growing number of his followers led to the creation of ninja clans. However, despite his efforts to use ninshū to promote peace throughout the world, over time after his death, people began to use chakra as a means to become stronger and militarized this power, departing from the true teachings of ninshū and eventually forming what became ninjutsu.

Over time, Hagoromo eventually became a legend. His lineage was divided between the descendants of his two children, who eventually formed the Senju clan and the Uchiha clan (rival clans) and through distant relatives, the Uzumaki clan. Following Madara Uchiha’s acquisition and integration of Hashirama Senju’s DNA into his body, thus merging the Indra and Asura chakras and creating the Hagoromo chakra, the Rinnegan later resurfaced. Although he noted that nothing initially happened after the integration of the DNA, when Madara approached the end of his natural lifespan, the dōjutsu finally awakened. With this, Madara managed to undo Hagoromo’s seal on the receptacle of the ten-tailed demon by summoning it from the moon and formulated the plan for the Eye of the Moon to become the new jinchūriki of Juubi.

madara jinchuriki of juubi

Because Nagato, a student of Jiraiya, possessed the Rinnegan, Jiraiya suspected Nagato to be the reincarnation of the Sage himself. But in reality, Madara had secretly transplanted his own Rinnegan into the boy without his knowledge for the benefit of the Akastuki. Nagato, as a descendant of the Senju-related Uzumaki clan, was the perfect host for the dōjutsu; however, Nagato himself noted that his own power would have paled in comparison to the Sage’s. Others, including Kakashi Hatake and Ōnoki, noted that the Sage was a myth and that the Rinnegan was considered a mere mutation. Hagoromo’s recognition by the tail demons (and their apparent status as the only survivors of his lifetime), gave credibility to his existence.

Hundreds of years after Hagoromo’s death, Gamamaru’s prophecy of the boy who could change the world and unite the tailed demons was finally fulfilled, as the tailed beasts themselves agreed that this person was Naruto Uzumaki of the konoha village, granting him their trust and some of their respective powers.

Tales

  • Hagoromo (羽衣) literally means feather coat and refers to The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, in which Princess Kaguya is given a hagoromo to wear when she returns to the moon. The surname “Ōtsutsuki” (大筒木) roughly means “big bamboo” and comes from an obscure passage in the second volume of the Kojiki on the genealogies of Emperor Suinin, eleventh emperor of Japan, which states that he had a wife named Kaguyahime no Mikoto (迦具夜比売命), the daughter of a king named Ōtsutsukitarine no Miko (大筒木垂根王) ; Tradition has it that these individuals served as the basis for Princess Kaguya and the old bamboo cutter in the aforementioned tale.
  • Her horns may actually symbolize rabbit ears, representing her connection to the moon by evoking the moon rabbit; pop culture depictions of Princess Kaguya and the moon people often incorporate features like rabbit ears for this reason.
  • In the fourth data book, Hagoromo is called “Rikudō no Shinsen” (六道の神仙) on one occasion. Although both “sennin” and “shinsen” can be translated as “wise”, the latter is an archaic way of referring to supernatural beings and even gods.
  • The necklace Hagoromo wore could be a reference to the Yasakani jewel, a legendary magatama necklace that is part of the Japanese imperial insignia, along with the Kusanagi sword and the Yata mirror.
  • Hagoromo shares the same nickname as the first and third Hokage, who were all known as the “God of the Shinobi” (忍の神, Shinobi no Kami).
  • Before his full appearance in the manga, Naruto Shippuden depicted Hagoromo with a different color scheme: he had light skin and dull brown hair, the magatama around his neck and the markings on his back were red, and the upper part of his shakujō was golden.
  • Although he uses the Spheres of Truth in the manga, he is not listed as a user of this technique in the fourth databook.
