Izumi Uchiha (うちはイズミ, Uchiha Izumi) was a kunoichi of the fearsome Uchiha clan of the hidden village of Konoha.
Izumi was the daughter of Hazuki Uchiha. Unlike her mother, Izumi’s father was not an Uchiha, and because of this, their family lived separately from the Uchiha clan for the first few years of Izumi’s life keeping her away from any feuds between the Uchiwa clan and the village or rival clans. During the attack of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox Kyubi, her father died protecting her. Because of the grief caused by his death, as well as the guilt that he would not have been killed if Izumi had been stronger, Izumi ended up awakening the clan’s hereditary dodjutsu, the Sharingan. Unlike the Byakugan, the curse of the Uchiha influences the user of the sharingan to fill his heart with hatred. She and her mother later joined the Uchiwa clan.
Izumi enrolled in Konoha Ninja Academy a few years later. Like other girls her age, Izumi had a crush on Itachi Uchiha, a boy in the class next to hers. She tried to talk to him during breaks, to go home with him after class and to defend him against the criticism of their classmates because of Itachi’s abilities and ninjutsu. At first, he lost interest in Izumi as he did with all the other girls until he found out that she had the Sharingan, which he had not yet awakened himself. He then became warmer towards her every time their paths crossed. One such occasion occurred shortly after Itachi graduated from the Ninja Academy, which he had been allowed to do earlier because of his prodigious skills: he met Izumi as they were both returning from the Uchiha’s lair. Izumi asked him about his new life as an official ninja, and Itachi asked if he had made any progress with his Sharingan. When Izumi started asking about the secret meetings that the older Uchiha held at night, Itachi – who was not allowed to discuss these meetings with her – advised her not to talk about them anymore. They then walked the rest of the way home in silence.
A few months after Itachi was promoted to chūnin, his father, Fugaku Uchiha clan leader, encouraged him to spend more time with people his own age. Thus, he had lunch with Izumi. Izumi was impressed by the recent news of Itachi’s accomplishments, and worried that she would never be able to match him. Itachi distracted her by pointing out that she would soon be graduating from the Ninja Academy a year early. When that didn’t comfort her, he asked her why she wanted to become a ninja, because the life of a ninja was full of hardships. She answered that her father was a ninja, and besides, she would naturally want to have the same career as the person she loved. Itachi didn’t understand what she meant, and Izumi, upset, chose to end their lunch early.
Izumi didn’t get a chance to talk to Itachi again until she graduated from the academy and became a genin. They both apologized for their behavior during the previous lunch. Itachi asked her about her recent ninja assignments in Konoha village, which Izumi described as menial and easy. Izumi congratulated Itachi on his recent admission to the Danzo-led Anbu, but shared his concern that he was doing too much for someone his age. Izumi continued to see Itachi at the nightly Uchiha meetings, which she was now allowed to attend. Like Itachi, Izumi disapproved of the clan’s growing anger towards Konoha and its leaders. Itachi’s disapproval eventually damaged his relationship with the rest of the clan, and he stopped attending the meetings. After the death of Shisui, a friend of Itachi, Izumi tried to visit Itachi at his home, but Fugaku informed him that Itachi was out. As Izumi left, Fugaku encouraged her to give Itachi the support he was unable to. She assured him that she would.
In Naruto shippuden we learn that the Uchiha clan has finally decided to try to overthrow the Konoha government. As the planning of their coup enters its final stages, Itachi attends another nightly clan meeting, his first after a year’s absence. He pleaded with the clan members not to go through with the coup and tried to offer other ways to resolve the situation in Konoha, but he was quickly deemed a traitor and expelled from the meeting. Izumi followed him when he left. He advised her to return to the meeting so that she would not be labeled a traitor as well, but Izumi replied that she did not care. She encouraged him to continue trying to reason with Fugaku and the rest of the Uchiha, believing that only he could convince them. Itachi replied that it was too late and left her behind.
In order to avoid the massive casualties that the war between the Uchiha and Konoha would surely cause, Itachi was forced by Konoha forces to wipe out the entire Uchiha clan in one night in view of his position in the Anbu, which was called the Uchiha Clan Massacre. He decided to make Izumi his first victim. He broke into her house, knocked out her mother and when he was found by Izumi, he used the Tsukuyomi on her. In the space of a second, his genjutsu allowed Izumi to live seventy years of an illusory life: she becomes a chūnin; Itachi proposes to her; she retires as a ninja; she and Itachi get married; Izumi gives birth; they raise their children; the children become adults; she grows old with Itachi; Izumi falls ill; Itachi takes care of her; she is on her deathbed. When the illusion ended, Izumi collapsed and used her last moment of consciousness to thank Itachi. She then died, the death she experienced in the illusion tricking her body into expiring as well.
Izumi and Itachi
In the anime, Izumi met Itachi several years earlier than in the novel, when she invited him to play with her and other children their age. He refused, which prompted the other children to start bullying him. Only Izumi defended him. On the night of the nine-tailed fox demon attack, Izumi was separated from her parents. She was saved from falling debris by Itachi, who then led her to a safe shelter. She thanked him and asked if she could take Itachi’s little brother, Sasuke. Itachi agreed on the condition that she not make Sasuke cry, which she promised to do. When Sasuke cried in any way, Itachi took him back. Sasuke immediately stopped crying as soon as he was returned to Itachi, annoying Izumi.
In the anime, on the night of the fall of the Uchiha clan, Izumi confronted the masked man during his attack on the Konoha military police headquarters. Her attacks on the masked man failed and she was killed by him.
Izumi was described as a kind and caring girl for an Uchiha. After her father’s sacrifice, Izumi was traumatized and blamed herself. Since then, she decided to live up to her father’s example by becoming stronger so she could help others like her father did. Because of this, Izumi never fell victim to the curse of hatred, unlike the vast majority of her clan members. Even though she seemed to distrust the rest of her clan, such as Itachi and Shisui Uchiha, she still had great pride and faith in her clan, as she refused to believe that an Uchiha would have summoned Kurama to cause the death and destruction that cost her father his life.
Her desire to help others weighed heavily on her, as she was deeply sorry that she was not progressing as quickly as Itachi, to whom she measured her abilities. When Itachi tried to convince her to abandon her goal of helping others because of her innocence and weaknesses, she was visibly hurt.
Izumi was deeply in love with Itachi, so much so that she accepted Itachi’s decision to end his life for the sake of the village, and was grateful to be given the life she wanted with him: to grow old and have children together, even if it was only a genjutsu.
Izumi had long brown hair (in a ponytail in her youth) with bangs framing her face and onyx eyes, with a mole under her right eye. She wore a long-sleeved purple shirt with a high collar and the Uchiha clan symbol on the back, loose blue pants, a shuriken harness on her right leg, a red armband on her left arm, and a long purple fingerless glove that ran almost the length of her arm.
When her father died during the attack on Konoha by the nine-tailed fox demon, she awakened her Sharingan, even earlier than Itachi himself. However, she wasn’t able to manage it for long, quickly fading away every time she activated it because she didn’t have the necessary chakra levels. It didn’t get any better as she always fainted, even when she got close to her genin degree. In the anime, it was noted that she had particularly advanced taijutsu prowess. It was implied that Izumi qualified as a kunoichi for having graduated a year earlier than the others.
