What is Ichiraku Ramen in Naruto ?

Ramen Ichiraku (ラーメン一楽, Rāmen Ichiraku, literally meaning: ramen is the best pleasure) is a ramen restaurant in Konoha village.

History

Ichiraku Ramen was founded by Teuchi thirty-four years before the beginning of Part 2. Although quite small and modest in appearance, Ramen Ichiraku has always been popular with the villagers and ninjas of Konoha because of Teuchi’s great attention to taste, which gives the ramen an almost artistic quality. Like any ramen establishment, Ramen Ichiraku offers various toppings, such as char siu and hard-boiled eggs. In the hidden village of Konoha, seaweed was the most popular topping for many years until, after the Fourth Great Shinobi War, it was surpassed by Naruto.

Ichiraku Ramen is Naruto Uzumaki’s favorite restaurant. He eats there regularly – usually stopping by between missions – and he is often joined by Iruka Umino, another frequent customer or else by his comrades like Hinata, Sakura and even Sasuke Uchiwa or their sensei. Because Naruto has been a loyal customer for most of his life, Teuchi and his daughter, Ayame, were among the few people in Konoha who did not treat Naruto with animosity during his youth as others did because of the nine-tailed fox-demon sealed inside him. Naruto takes Hinata Hyūga to Ramen Ichiraku on their first date; in the anime, this has the effect of making Hinata a regular customer, to the point that she has won at least one cooking contest. In Naruto Shippuden, Teuchi gives Naruto a lifetime pass to Ramen Ichiraku as a wedding gift, which the anime shows as having been used extensively in the following years.

The original Ramen Ichiraku is destroyed along with the rest of Konoha during the Assault of Pain, the leader of the Akatsuki before whom the Konoha ninjas could do nothing. However, Naruto managed to defeat Nagato and with the support of the entire ninja alliance of the five Kage and Sasuke Uchiha, they managed to defeat Obito, Madara and Kaguya in succession with their formidable jutsu and techniques. As Naruto became more and more famous, first as a war hero and then as the Hokage, Ramen Ichiraku flourished; in Konoha, it was explained that this was because customers hoped to see Naruto there or simply wanted to emulate his success. The second Ramen Ichiraku is not suitable for this growing business, so it is remodeled and expanded into an indoor restaurant at some point after Ayame takes over. In Boruto, Ayame even makes Naruto his official promoter; in one of his advertisements, he claims that Ichiraku Ramen is just as nutritious as soldier pills.

In addition to the freshly made ramen for which he is known, Ichiraku has occasionally tried his hand at other products. In the anime, Teuchi starts making diet ramen to help Ayame lose weight, which eventually becomes popular with female customers. In another episode, Ayame convinces her father to serve tsukemen instead of ramen. Naruto disapproves of this decision and the next time he is seen visiting, he starts serving ramen again. At some point, Ramen Ichiraku starts selling instant ramen, the empty cups of which tend to litter Naruto’s desk at work.

To know

  • There is a real ramen restaurant, also called Ramen Ichiraku, in Fukuoka, Japan, near the place where locals say Masashi Kishimoto went to college (Kyushu Sangyo Daigaku). The restaurant has two locations: one near the JR Kyu-dai Mae station, close to the university, and a second in downtown Hakata. The restaurants sell tissues featuring various Naruto characters in noodle cups labeled “Ichiraku Ramen.”
  • In the manga, Teuchi hires Matsu and Nishi to help him in his store while Ayame is on vacation. Both are quite inept, accidentally sticking their fingers in the ramen or spilling the bowls on themselves.
  • In Naruto Shippūden: The Lost Tower, Naruto travels twenty-three years into the past and witnesses the grand opening of Ramen Ichiraku, a contradiction of the manga.
  • During the Ramen Ichiraku eating contest, Hinata Uzumaki holds the record for forty-six servings in one sitting, earning her the nickname “Queen of Gluttony.” Chōji Akimichi holds the record for second place with forty-two servings, followed by his father, Chōza, with at least eighteen servings. The top three records have a snapshot of the winner and his or her portion record written on it, displayed behind the cash register[4].
  • The first name Naruto was given to the protagonist of the manga because Jiraya had inspired him to his father Minato, he recalls this memory during his fight against Pain.
